Severe thunderstorms that struck the area on Wednesday, August 1, exacted their toll on a number of Salem’s trees and buildings. Salem Fire Chief Nick Blanton reported that winds in excess of 70 mph stripped the roofs off of two barns and a building on the town square. Blanton added that some roads were blocked when tree limbs that were killed by the 2009 ice storm were blown to the ground.

Severe thunderstorms downed a tree next to the Salem First National Banking Company parking lot. Paige Cooper, the Salem FNBC branch manager, said that the tree was scheduled to be removed on Saturday, August 4.
